Frodo .I went to the Dell site and downloaded and installed the latest driver.
Googling (which I always do before asking for help) indicate this is a common problem after a format and reinstall.
I am also getting an error at startup; "Failed to load resource file,check set up". I DID get an error message from ATI, I think the catalyst control.
On a forum some guy claimed he fixed the sound problem by doing a repair with the OS disc.
That's a bit drastic at this stage.
No sound is an irritation, not a catastrophe. The unloaded resource file has made no noticeable difference to performance.
