I think it's more lazy than dumb. We are wired to seek out the path that seems the most efficient (that is to say, the least amount of work for the greatest amount of reward). Which is why fad diets and diet pills are so popular. Unfortunately I think that leads people to a false understanding about our diet and how it affects our weight. The dieting industry has led people to believe that "diet" refers to a short-term change in eating habits. But our diet is what we eat. Making long-term changes is the key.
That, and exercising regularly, which is also more about laziness than stupidity.

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
