If he said that humans on average didn't live longer than around 25 that may be true. A shockingly large number of children died before their 5th birthday.
So if you took a study from two brothers, one that died at age 1 and the other that died at age 89, you'd have an average lifespan of 45 years.
Certainly our midlife mortality has dropped because of better medical care, but old people have always been around.
It's true that many people throughout history have lived long lives. Ramses the Great lived until his late 80s.
Lifespan is conditional on many factors: Lifestyle, culture, living conditions, the individuals constitution, etc. While Ramses lived for a very long time, many of the labourers in the fields and building the monuments rarely lived beyond 40-50.
