As Clarke said, Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Christians learned their lessons about weather, earthquakes, and disease; these temper tantrums of an angry god are actually just physical phenomena that we now understand quite well.
That's why they almost always insist on placing the goal posts in supernatural territory, because the supernatural, by definition, cannot be examined, tested or in any way independently verified. It's a safe zone, from which they can rest assured that science can't invalidate their beliefs. Their appeals to the supernatural are a dishonest attempt to subvert Clarke's Third Law.
