The best advice I ever received from my father was, "Go do something, anything, even if it is wrong." At the time I was a highly unmotivated high school graduate. Think of your past as the wake of a boat, it shows where the boat has been but in no way does it set the course of the boat. So, statements like, "Because I have trouble going out on my own because I have problems with my independence." can quickly be restated as, "Because I had trouble going out on my own because I had problems with my independence" (bolding mine)
