Every time I wanted more money I worked hard and got promoted.

From my experience, compared with the experiences of others, that usually only happens when one brown-noses those higher up in the corporate hierarchy. I have worked with places for years where I remained part-time and never got promoted even though I worked harder than anyone else in the department. I received customer compliments all the time, but I was never even considered for a raise or promotion.
