Supposedly you're being saved from yourself. Though to me it seems like he sacrificed himself, to himself, to save us from a place he made, as punishment for a cursed he placed on us. That doesn't really paint a pleasant picture of him, though, so it's most likely him having mercy on you for being evil at your core. Everyone is. Even children are. Isn't that nice?
