Avast comes with a load of additional scanners (called "Shields") that add an additional level of security. One time Avast failed to notice a new type of spam virus that sits in your system and sends spam email. Whilst the Avast virus scanner didn't detect it, the mail scanner did. After all, you aren't going to be sending 100's of messages with the word "viagra" in them (having said that, I am talking to Dotard...).
If you keep the virus database up to date, you won't have any problems. Of course, it won't be as good as some of the paid products, but the difference is negligible.
