A handful of Puritans in 1620 are not the cause of today's problem.
I take it you mean today's problems in the US, we do not have anything like the issues with fundamentalist Christians you do in the UK. Which was kind of my point, albeit slightly sardonic.
But to open it up - for those who find my humour obfuscating - for a country with a Christian Monarchy and historically stronger ties between church and state (i.e. the UK) we have virtually no problems with fundamentalist Christians in society and politics. I find it deeply ironic when that is juxtaposed with the US, who have separation of church and state built into the constitution and yet have to suffer quite a bit of fundamentalist Christian nonsense.

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)
