He told me NASA somehow factored that into something they were doing to find a window into orbit around the Earth.Others have already provided the links, so all I will add is to point out that the way the story is told implies that there was some way for NASA's engineers to determine that there was a day "missing" from some time in the distant past. Now... how exactly would they have figured that out?
It's one of the sillier urban legends and only has any traction at all because it supposedly confirms something that people want to be true. Much the same way that someone seems to stumble over the location of Noah's ark every few years or the virgin Mary makes her Caucasian face appear on a piece of toast from time to time.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
