It's a scare tactic to keep the members in the cult. If you abandon your faith then you will have no meaning or purpose in your life. Then we look to ex-xtians (I am not one) do we ever see a person who has left their cult complaining that suddenly their life become purposeless? Not a single case that I know of. Life-long atheists (I am one) do not spend their days moping around in a state of gloom wishing that they had some meaning in life. Not one that I have ever encountered.
If there were any truth to that we would see at least one case in which a person felt that they had no purpose because and only because they did not worship a magical goo-goo-fuck in the sky. Granted, just because I do not know of such a case does not mean that there isn't one. But, if there were such a case I would have heard about it because the fundies would be jumping up and down, jacking off, and shrieking -- "EEEEP!!! EEEEEP! EEEEEP!" Because that's just what they do every time the think that they come across something that helps support their bullshit.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste -- don't pollute it with bullshit.
