Many Christians repeat what they've heard from parents and others because they believe that as figures of authority they can't be wrong. I question things my pastor preaches and we'll discuss and study the question. I always go back and study what nonbelievers say about scripture.
Great statement. I generally do not take the words of Christians as truth.
But you hit the nail on the head regarding repeating what they have heard. Amazing how many haven't really read the bible, or only read selected parts... and going back in time, well, i'm pretty sure that a majority of the books were not first hand accounts, especially the OT. These were all probably based on oral traditions (the Jewish religion even has a lot of its beliefs founded in oral traditions) so saying that the bible contains the truth is a bit like expecting a message to come through a game of broken telephone.
As for studying the scripture... you know you can really read whatever you want to read in the bible. There are verses that support almost any position. Need a justification to kill someone? Go and look in the OT... many references to god killing people or commanding they be killed for any number or reasons.
