If there is more desolate place on earth than route 8 along the southern edge of Arizona I can't imagine what it is.
Stationing troops there would have them begging to go back to Iraq for better weather.
Route 8 ( between Tucson and Yuma ) is two strips of pavement. Walk 10 yards off the road in either direction and you could shoot a caveman movie without having to worry about the modern world encroaching.
