In my house, my wife and I seldom said grace before meals. It wasn't until I came out as atheist that she started thinking about all the spiritual stuff lacking in our lives. So, our compromise is at each dinner, we each (including our daughters) say at least one thing we're thankful for. There's no real prayer component to it. No one is explicitly thanking God or in any other way invoking his name.
That being said, I do rather like the idea of getting my girls to think about things that they are thankful for, and to realize how that fits into their lives.
