Presumably, because he can fuck you up eight ways to Sunday, and there's nothing anyone else can do about it. Which wouldn't be so bad if he was otherwise a pretty cool and calm guy instead of the "Rage Machine on a Hair Trigger" that his biography claims.

As long as you obey your spouse and don't try to leave him he won't beat you. But even when you do everything he wants he still beats you. But have no fear after he beats you he brings you flowers and tells you he did it for your own good.
