It means "bitch" or "whore" (edit: in Spanish) but the impression I got was that it was treated more like the word "cunt" in English (that is to say, you had better duck if you were going to call someone a puta). It's not a word I ever used, though.
In English I guess it's just "fuck" or "shit" and the variations thereof, or at least those are the ones I use. Not as insults, since I rarely insult people and I rarely use profanities when I do. If I was prone to insulting people in colorful ways I'd probably use some combination of swear word and receptacle, like "cock holster" or "shitbag" or something similarly dry and unoriginal.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
