The Jews were an instrument used in the killing of Jesus. It you want to get technical, the Romans were the ones who killed Jesus. They're the ones who nailed him to the cross and ran a spear into his side.

They must have followed him because they recognized God in him, even though they didn't fully comprehend. They probably went from Jewish to Christian on Pentecost when they received the Holy Spirit and went out and began to spread the word.
