The substitution goes back a long way.
The commandment to not make images or bow down to them was removed from the Catholic bible (and the command to not covet was split in half to cover the omission).
Besides Catholics, there are many idols people bow down to.
Hinduism is packed with them.
The pope calls himself the"Vicar" of Christ, the word means "Replacement", therefore he, himself could be considered an idol.
What about angels and the devil? Not to mention demons. The devil sounds like a god to me and the angels and demons demi-gods at least.
Most Christians seem to idolize the Bible.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
