That one makes more sense and is more logically consistent with what we find in both science and the Bible. From there it follows that "developing spiritual discernment" is another form of self-influence that isn't much different from the way we deify lots of things in our lives (important people, popular people, a country, a nationality, an ethnicity, a sports team, etc). When a person finds it difficult to defend his particular obsession, he goes on the offensive. For example, claiming that those who deny his delusion are using 'made-up intellectual pretenses' to try to 'disarm' the special insight that only a select and precious few happen to enjoy.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
