I knew Christians in both protestant and catholic circles who venerate the cross and believe that it holds some kind of divine power. I have known hard core catholics to always have an open bible in their home, the belief being that it would ward off evil. All of these things when used in the ways just described are idols. The exorcist priest casting out demons and waving his cross in the face of the possessed is idolizing the cross as well. You may argue that it is just a reminder to Satan of the sacrifice of Christ, but trust me if that did happen, the devil does not need to be constantly reminded. If the sacrifice of Christ was such a devastating victory I don't think that Satan would easily forget that, unless Satan suffers from Alzheimers.
When I was in the church a minister asked me why I wore a cross and I could not answer him, he then asked me if Christ died on the electric chair would you wear the image of an electric chair around your neck? From that day forward I never wore a cross again, and I made sure when I preached my sermons, that my hearers knew that it was not the cross but he who died on the cross that we should venerate and follow.

There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition
