Why bizarrely? I'm trying to see how religion factors into this at all and failing unless it's because we think that all Christians and Jews take "spare the rod and spoil the child" as a commandment to go forth and spank.
I don't think spanking is usually a good method. But occasionally, not often, spanking is the best method. And there are parents who use it more than necessary without crossing the line and becoming monsters. Would that we all became perfect with parenthood.
I agree with the rest of your post 100%. Parenthood Is simple... Until you have to do it. It's a well known truth that in medicine it's very unwise to treat your own children. You have no objectivity. That's why gps take their kids to other gps. And why I so often find myself thinking "shit, could have done that better. It's easy to raise other people's kids!
