It's not the State's responsibility to become the Grim Reaper because they've judged someone to be unworthy of life. No to mention the exorbitant costs of appeals while keeping someone on death row, along with the fact that courts can make mistakes, and while exonerating someone after they've served part of a sentence isn't ideal, the one penalty you can't reverse or fix is the death penalty.
