How very un-like them.
It's really easy to demolish their assertion that atheists are simply 'angry' at this god character (whatever that is). I've been an atheist my entire life. Never once formed any sort of positive belief about a deity. The first time I was introduced to a 'god' was at primary school by an evangelical Christian head teacher, and even back then I can remember thinking it was absurd.
It must get tiring having the supposed 'factual' foundation for your beliefs shot down repeatedly, though. I know I'd be tired.
Yes it is easy to say the words that ought to shoot the assertion that atheists are simply "angry" at this god person. Getting a Christian to believe you is harder.
I grew up in a very godly household. I played hide and go seek during adult prayer meetings. And I remember being awed by the sense of union when they celebrated communion together over the remains of union. I have lots of fond church memories too.
But, I also remember wondering for about as long as I can remember how adults could believe this stuff.
Explaining that I remember the church and it's people fondly, but that doesn't mean I don't think think their belief in magic is nuts, doesn't change any Christian mind. I'm obviously still angry.
And since then, I have gotten angry about various kinds of religion. When the fundies want to repress sex education, suggest that this nation is founded on Christianity, prohibit teaching evolution, or suggest there is scientific fact in the Bible, I get angry. But I'm not angry at god. God doesn't enter into it. It's people who believe in him and do stupid things because of that belief that make me angry.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
