All jokes aside, sexuality is pretty much the core thing in any romantic or marital relationship.

I'd argue that in fact, at least among heterosexual people, reproduction is pretty much the core thing, and the delightful haze that surrounds the sexual act is in place to subvert the mind. We think we are using sex for pleasure, but I think the reality is more that the sex is using the pleasure to trick us into reproducing-- with all the personal inconveniences and losses of liberty that involves. And while we like to say, "Nah, not me, my vision's clear enough," we have to accept that the thousands upon thousands of cautionary tales walking around out there started with someone else saying exactly the same thing.

I think the ascetics have it right-- only by completely subjecting the body to the will can one really have liberty.

Plenty of animals, including of course humans, have sex for other reasons including pleasure, but chief among them, especially with such great apes as bonobos (where about 60% of sexual contact is female-female), is social bonding.
