The paganization of the West has brought some of the bizarre practices of those people groups like piercings and disfiguring.
Owners of business, dealing with the public are very sensitive about how their efforts are perceived.
Maybe in central Africa this stuff would be more accepted- but not likely here.

I am shocked to see an otherwise pretty ( or plain) girl screw up her face.
I don't get it.
I suspect there is some subliminal subculture influencing this.
Is this the case?
Do they hate themselves?

First of all, the "west" has always been "pagan"; as far back as we know, the west didn't receive much if any Christian attention until the middle ages. After all, the "pagans" were here first. So, under your system of logical premises, it would be the Christian invaders who spread their "naked body ideals" to others, and then expected others to follow suit.

You don't have to "get it". You don't have to "get" why gay people are gay. You just have to leave them be. Isn't "free will" a thing for you people?

You're suggesting that the certain "subculture" of "people who do things like this" is putting out messages that cannot be consciously detected. That's crazy. At least Christian churches use tried and true hypnosis methods in order to make people more willing to be submissive, but your suggestion is a whole other level of crazy. For that to happen, pretty much every tattoo and BM parlor in the city would have to be playing silent subliminals all day every day. And even then, subliminals are kinda weak. So "No, this is not the case." And PLEASE save your pathetic psych evals for someone who's actually in need of them, not some large, amorphous group.

TO THE OP: Sucks to have a metal allergy. Don't go with rubber, you'll get discoloration and deterioration of the material after some time. Also, it's pretty porous, and cleaning the stuff may be next to impossible.

Glass would seem to be your optimal choice here, it's highly non-porous. You can even boil the fuckers if you want. Clean-up's pretty easy, as there's little in the way of chemical solvents that will hurt glass. You could even get con'c HCl and drop 'em in there for a few hours.

Not entirely sure, but perhaps you have a high skin-cell shed rate. (Pure, pulled straight from my ass speculation.) Pay particular scrubbing attention to your ears in the shower over a week or two, and see if that does anything particular.
