I think to understand hate, one also has to understand love. The two are virtually one and the same, yet complete opposites by their nature. Think about it:

Love is an extremely powerful attachment,
Hate is also an extremely powerful attachment.

Love and hate are weak attachments... prone to destruction from such things as betrayal. If you want a strong attachment: try rope.

Love motivates the best actions possible in us,
Hate motivates the worst actions possible in us.

Love motivates the "worst" actions 'possible' in us... from blinding ourselves to the thing we love, to jealousy, to fixation on the one, few, or many.
Hate motivates the "best" actions 'possible' in us... from a strong will to see 'justice' done, to fuel against 'injustice', to giving people a strong sense of personality.

Love is loving another person despite all of their flaws,
Hate is hating another person because of all of their flaws.

"Love is loving"... tis hard to define words when one uses them to define themselves...

However, i disagree with your intent by that. Love is perhaps the ficklest thing I know of... and hate can be as blind as the eyeless.

Instead of all these metaphorical definitions... let us go with the one that is applicable and intuitive: Love is an 'acute' liking... hate is an acute disliking. Wasn't that easy? :Sleepy:

and finally, hate is what happens when one spurns love away, it is the rejection of all of those good things that love brings. When you turn away love for no reason other than to turn it away, I believe it becomes a very wicked and corrupt sort of love*, one that isn't emotionally healthy at all. I.e.- hated.

*Similar to LULZ' corruption of L-O-L

Rather... one can both love and hate at once. One might think of it as neutrality... but then one would be forgetting that the amount of love/hate one feels is not necessarily equal. One never turns away anything with no reason... even a reflex is for a reason.

Hate can be healthy... as love can be unhealthy. Hate can be good... as love can be bad. Hate can get you killed... as love can kill you. Neither are necessarily anything more than like or dislike... and 'hate'/'love' are usually intended to emphasize the appreciation/depreciation for the thing.

Not to imply that I agree with Watson... but as to 'is <black> skin color a flaw <to a person that doesn't like black skin>?: yes.

You're just playing with the word 'flaw'. Personally disliking 'black skin' does not make that black skin a 'flaw', since that person's skin is supposed to be that color. The bigot's perspective is what's flawed. Disliking their skin color is not a valid reason to hate another person.

But the bigot is supposed to be a bigot... your perspective must be flawed!

Not liking the color (of the skin) is most certainly is a valid reason to hate (if not another person) a person's skin color. It may not be the most understandable of hates... but people have killed in hate over "less". (Edit: especially as valid is really a loose term that applies even to this: All dogs are mountains, all mountains are blue, therefore all dogs are blue. That may not be sound (as neither al mountains are blue nor all dogs mountains)... but it sure is valid)
