I'm actually shaking right now - it's the first time I've thought of it in years. You can never unsee that stuff.
I lived through the revolution in 1978-79 which overthrew the Shah of Iran. I was twelve years old. I'll never forget what I witnessed there; rioting around my school being broken up by army troops with a couple of armored cars, my bus rolling over bodies like they were speedbumps.
I wrote a book about it, and tried to put it to bed, but goddamn if I don't still leak a little when I think back to being young and terrified and deflowered. It changed me forever.
