Re: the guillotine, there's a story about one beheaded aristo (Mme Pompadour?) whose head bounced into the crowd. Someone caught it and gave it a hefty slap across the face - whereupon it scowled in anger at him. I bet that guy shit his pants for years afterwards.

Then there was Anne Boleyn, beheaded with a French sword. As the swordsman held the head aloft by her hair, the neck pouring blood, her eyes flicked around the horrified crowd and her mouth opened and closed as she tried to speak. She didn't seem to know she was dead, or soon would be.

I'll close with this harrowing account I came across of a guy who got beheaded in a car crash. The driver recounts that his friend's head bounced and landed in his former lap, where it looked at where it used to be before giving a great moan of despair. Then the eyes rolled back into the head and he died.
