Concerning online privacy from your parents... it really depends on how tech savvy they are.
If, at most, they'll check the browser history, incognito mode is enough.
If you're router logs every site requested through the DNS, and your parents know how to access this information, then the encrypted ssh tunnel or VPN to some machine on the outside and out of their reach is required.
When I visit the UK, I use a raspberry pI at my home in Portugal to where I connect and create a ssh tunnel... mostly to bypass some strange rules the ISPs have which block certain sites, but also keeps all my Web traffic encrypted up to my home connection... but I don't care about that one, since I'm the one paying for it.
