Not only has the Catholic church removed portions, they have even made up a few things (purgatory, for example)... but the bible(s) have gone through much more editing than even the Catholic church has done. The books of the New Testament were all written by different people at different times and none of them actually knew that Jesus guy. When looked at critically, neither bible seems to contain much in the way of verifiable facts. Believing that the bible(s) are true, after giving them a critical evaluation, requires faith that they were, in fact, inspired by the big guy himself.
In other words, in order for the bible(s) to be true, the Christian god must exist. And even then, there is the question of historical evidence that confirms the existence of the people and places in the stories, of which there is little to none. Even if the Christian god is real, the factual accuracy of the bible(s) are questionable at best.
