The fear of death, the lack of control over one's life and the need for justice and meaning are common emotional issues which push people to believe in a higher power (or any superstition, conspiracy theory). They need to keep their belief to avoid emotional distress which leads to rejection of any evidence contradicting it. Humans desperately need landmarks in their environment.
