@PR- By the strictest definition in Christianity as Fr0d0 has given you is, God is. This doesn't denote we can't know anything about God, just that historically in Biblical scripture people were chastised for thinking they knew everything about God and this modern Christian attitude is probably more of a safety position. IMO, If I had to nail down some attributes to God I would say
1-God is a creative entity existing incorporeally
2-God's presence isn't detectable by today's standards within the known universe
3-God is the entity that created matter and guided the creation of the universe and it's laws and axioms.
4-God is a moral compass in both Jesus' teachings about God and in the modern revelations that are observed
5-If there is an afterlife, and a judgement, God would have the best perspective to judge fairly.
6-God's hand allows for a design in chaos that exceed chance and provides sychronicity and shows purpose individually
@KN- There are things I don't publicise to others (web or real life) , that doesn't mean I hide them from myself or use religion to shield me from thinking about those things. We all have skeletons in our closets. I don't need religion and I don't need forgiveness. I think religion has become convoluted and detrimental to God. I want forgiveness becase I've done some bad stuff. Do I want or use either of those more so bad to the point I'm warping my own delusional reality, I don't think so. I can't really be the judge of that though objectively.
@Dar-Very valid point, allow me to rephrase. There is either an after life or there isn't. If those that prescribe that there isn't (mostly atheists) are correct then unless you wasted your life pointing fingers and intolerance it won't really make any difference at all. If the opposing side is right, it's a crap shoot to know what's going to happen so place your bets with whatever belief you see as more logical and cross your fingers.

"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post
