It wasn't that long ago that Christianity was as barbaric as far too much of the east is still today. Even Christianity still today in Africa has it's own tribal wars with Islam and pockets of them like "The Lord's Resistance Army" uses violence and rape to dominate non Christians.
The west became civil in spite of religion not because of religion. The east is simply still stuck in the past.
