I think Rasetsu is right, it's often the complete disagreement that rankles as much as the tone.
I don't find disagreement irksome; matter of fact, I find a lot to learn from it when it's well-considered. What I dislike is when someone misstates my position, ignores what I've said, or gets rude with me. At that point, I have no compunctions about making change in the coin tendered.
For instance, Michael is unfailingly polite to me, and though we disagree about matters theological, I enjoy a back-and-forth with him because I come away richer for it -- and I try to give that feeling to him too.
My mileage varies according to the interlocutor.
