Some cultures had a ceremony involving the gods, but they had ceremonies involving the gods for the sale of property, crowning of kings, the election of Roman officials, and setting the cornerstones of buildings.Yup....just the states stamp of approval in each case. I don't think that in any example of such a ceremony god is/was required to attend or validate any documents or agreements, eh? lol. It would have taken an awfully long time to get married or sell property if that were the case (or even if people believed it was the case). Since we don't see any such obstruction in evidence...I think it's safe to conclude that even those people who attended or facilitated those ceremonies were content with the secular proceedings. Faith was then, as now - additional pomp and pageantry with regards to marriage/the sale of property.
(people where I'm at makes deals based upon "their word as a christian" -and of course....binding contracts. Don't even get me started on these amish nitwits.......)
