Free to play, pay to win games are the new norm.
Me, I refuse to pay, so when it gets stupidly difficult to beat the random number generator, I just stop playing.
Happened with the facebook game Farm Heroes Saga... and I think it's happening with Candy crush as well... I still play world of tanks as it has a nice balance between what you gain by paying and skill with the free stuff.
As for mobile games, I use the same rule of thumb: pay for nothing... if they ask for money to keep playing uninstall.
My kids learned the best practices from their dad: have fun, if it says "pay", don't click it and play something else.... even if they do click it, I've never put any credit card info on there, so they'd have no luck.
