Before Adam and Eve ever partook of the forbidden fruit, the tree was referred to as the tree of "knowledge of good and evil." Wouldn't this, therefore mean that evil already existed? Otherwise it would have been called the tree of knowledge of good and 'something that doesn't exist yet.'
God being omniscient and perfectly righteous would have known what evil was, even if it did not exist at the time He put the tree in the Garden. Evil actually existed when Lucifer sinned against God, that however did not effect the earth or the rest of creation, why, I can't say for sure I do have my own ideas. Only when Adam and Eve sinned did it effect mankind and creation. God knew what the universe was before He created it.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
