It was bad enough when my relatives did that. If it had been a doctor, I'd have been pissed.
When I was 25 my 19 year old brother was driving me in his Fiat spider when a drunk passed out and head-on'd us. I was in and out of consciousness several times and my brother never regained consciousness. A friend of mine let me know he was brain dead. My crazy family though insisted on reporting to me daily what they thought all his little twitches meant. Breaking my arm, brain trauma, and losing my closest sibling were bad enough without having to take care of them and lay there unable to get away from their stupidity.
It is probably rare to be around someone dying without being deluged by everyone's fears and superstition. If I ever go on hospice I think I'll try to get restraining order against most of my family of origin.
