It is a little over half the the length of any of the three following books and was originally a children's book. When I first read it, I did not know or think it a children's book.
It is a children's book, and that is partially why it has garnered so much controversy. I'm a member of a Tolkien message board and the purists hate the films, but a chunk of them also hate the LotR movies for not following every thing to a"T". There is no pleasing them. But I think PJ did damn great job with the LotR trilogy and I can live without Bombadil, yet I can understand their beef with these newer films. The truth is Tolkien wanted to rewrite The Hobbit to be more mature and help connect the bridge to LotR, but he died before every pursuing it.
I doubt there ever would have been female elf arc, considering how males dominate his work, but he left behind enough information to piece together the events of Dol Guldor to create the sub plot there. I am looking forward to the final Hobbit film, but I remember the sheer excitement and midnight showing of RotK in 2003, and it is absent this go around.
