Where do you live again? Several years ago I saw something fitting that description in California, a large, somewhat bright, orange, and somewhat hazy and somewhat spherical object, moving south east to north west, faster than any commercial airplane at medium to high altitude, but much slower then any meteror, at perhaps half and hour after sunset. I would say it's visual size was approximate the same as the full moon.
I was able to tell exactly what it was because part of the through its arc in the sky, it suddenly dimmed and its spherical shape rapidly thinned down to almost like the shape of short searchlight beam within about 1 second, and then winked out for a split second before suddenly ballooning back to the original bright spherical shape again. I guessed I was looking at the exhaust plume of a rocket above atmosphere, still being illuminated by the sun because of its height. The change in the shape of the plume was the result of one stage burning out, being ejected, and a second stage igniting.
The next day my guess was confirmed, as news report indicated the airforce fired an unarmed minuteman missile booster from vandenberg airforce base on an unusual northly trajectory the previous evening as a part of some test, and at the time I lived approximately 350 north of vandenberg AFB.
