Crossing there has never been any problem. Even before Shengen. I crossed the border there in the early 80ies and didn't even notice.
We have a street which is identical with the border and has two names, a german and a dutch one on the respective side. Markers are still visible in the middle, and it was blocked for a while but was opened after protests
