As head of an extended Irish Catholic family,I'm occasionally obliged to attend rites of passage,referred to in my family as 'hatches,matches and dispatches' Such events are also marked by a craic,which can be fun as long as one remembers to leave before first blood. A craic is only considered a success if it includes the attendance of police and an ambulance. Having the coroner on standby is considered pretentious.
Was a time I would stand insolently at the back sneering at the priest. These days,I sit in a pew right up the front and promptly fall asleep.I've been told I sometimes snore loudly.
It eventually dawned on me that indifference is far more insulting than open hostility or contempt and requires far less energy to maintain..
