FWIW, Stormfront has the dubious distinction of being the first major hate site on the Internet. Of course, they don't see it as hate, they see it as having proper pride in their race. It goes back to 1995, founded by a former KKK boss named Don Black of Alabama. They consider the news media to be controlled by elements out to "get" white people. It's ZOG, doncha know? That would be the Zionist Occupation Government or some such nonsense. At least that is what I remember being told by some of these bozos aways back.
Yes, it does tend to be a working class phenomenon for the most part. There are no longer any decent blue collar jobs, and people are angry. They want somebody to blame, and when someone comes along with a (to them) plausible line of hogwash about why things are so bad, they'll bite. I see guys like Don Black as hustlers, they'll fleece these sheep for whatever they can get, and for all I know he may not even believe one iota of his racist claptrap.
These guys are very tribal, it seems to me. The world to them is a very hostile place full of people who are not members of the same tribe and they band together to feel safer. They can just let it all hang out when amongst their peers. They are very convinced of the essential rightness of their position. To them it is just so very obviously "natural" to stick with one's own kind. That "own kind" would mean any other human being because there is one race, the human race, to them is unthinkable. Tell them that and they just get all slackjawed with unbelief that a white person could fall for such obvious ZOG-inspired propaganda. To them, we are all different, and white people are on the top of the genetic heap.
In the 80's you used to see these skinhead gangs around where I came from. You had two basic types - the neo-nazi racist skins and "peace" skins who were into skateboarding and hard-core punk music. The "peace" skins liked the skinhead look and similar noisy music. They never went looking for trouble, but when the neo-nazis went prowling and found them, then they'd fight back in self defense. The neo nazis enjoyed a good scrap and did not much care who it was with. They had their own bands they listened to, like the British "Skrewdriver" who specialized in racist punk rock. They were easy to spot with their swastika, SS-runes and "88" tattoos. The "88" stood for Heil Hitler, h being the 8th letter of the alphabet.
They were always more of a west-coast thing then the east coast, and they might not be as prevalent as they once were, but I doubt they've completely disappeared. Whenever the economy tanks, people get desperate and go looking for someone to blame. Which is why your tea-party types are doing well, along with Fox news and the like.
But reactionary cretins of that ilk might be noisy, and get attention, but there really are not that many of them. Humanity has been steadily moving forward over the centuries, slowly, but still moving forward. We are better than this.
