Yes, there are some ugly things going on in the U.S. (North and South America too, but I think you mean the good old U.S. of A.), but if you think it's worse now than it ever was, you have the historical awareness of tree squirrel. Americans were not united about the revolution. The war didn't go well until it did. The articles of confederation didn't work. We almost got an early version of totalitarianism. We elected some not so bright gun slingers. We almost got creamed in 1812. Various economic panics followed. Neither the industrial revolution nor labor unionization went smoothly. Then there was WWI and the Great Depression. We did ugly things in WWII. Then with Korea and Vietnam we discovered the joys police actions pretending not to be wars. Find me a "true" American era.
That's all true, and a lot of it is very relevant.
