Which is to say justifiable because you say so and you can make it happen, and for some reason, still sleep at night?

Just say'n. Americans were not united about the revolution. The war didn't go well until it did. The articles of confederation didn't work. We almost got an early version of totalitarianism. We elected some not so bright gun slingers. We almost got creamed in 1812. Various economic panics followed. Neither the industrial revolution nor labor unionization went smoothly. Then there was WWI and the Great Depression. We did ugly things in WWII. Then with Korea and Vietnam we discovered the joys police actions pretending not to be wars. Find me a "true" American era.
