Suppose the hand goes, Limp, raise to $12, folded to you on the button. Raiser is unknown. Do you make it $22 or fold?
Preflop? Not nearly enough information. Depends on how the table is playing.
If the raiser is UTG+1 and an unknown and the blinds liable to fold, I probably fold (to a call) and watch him like a hawk to see what he's up to. I don't think you have much fold equity here against the raiser and no way do I want to play a big pot with that holding against an early position raiser. Yeah, position is nice - but absent a read, I'm giving early position raisers the benefit of the doubt until I learn otherwise.
If the blinds and the limper are likely to call, a call to set mine here is fine - and I want Mr. UTG+1 to have aces or kings.
ETA: because our raiser is an unknown, I'm not going to try and outplay him without having some clue as to his preflop range in that spot. I know many players will disagree with me, but personally, I'm more apt to let my reads develop of the course of a few hours rather than take that kind of a risk with a modest hand with showdown value heads up. I don't know what his range is, but I know what mine is, and 88 is a huge dog against most of it, and a flip against the rest.
