I don't think the word agnostic is pointless, because it is the blurred position where one doesn't know what to believe, or how to define one's own beliefs. The term "Atheist" does mean non-theist, but to most non-atheists, it signifies a position of absolute certainty that a god or deity doesn't exist. It might be literally wrong to use "agnostic" as a position in itself, but in absence of a better term to denote the blurred position, it does serve a meaningful purpose.
