What's even more telling is that they would rather a child live in an orphanage than with two loving parents of the same sex. There's no defense of that beyond "Eww, gross," but they know that approach would be even less well received.

He extended an olive branch to non-believers, and he's done a couple of other image-fixing things I can't remember specifically. I for one, however, have always seen it as just that, image-fixing, not truly genuine statements.
