A bit of all of those depending on what you get. Most of its superficial but they have little useful features that help.
They have really low latency to your PC so there is no delay between what you are doing on the mouse mat and what you are doing in game. Not a huge issue unless you have a wireless mouse where you really feel a problem. Some cheaper mice 'miss' some movement so motion isn't as fluid. This one has a feature where it will stop registering any movement as soon as its barely a centimeter off the mouse mat so when I lift it my crosshairs don't move. Useful for spinning around in games. The shape helps too seems I have big hands and normal sized mice give me hand cramps.
So essentially its just more precise and a little faster with a few useful extras.
