One thing I'm grateful for, specifically, in my life is that my parents took us to Iran, where I attended school for four years. Learning at a young age about the Mossadegh Affair, in which our CIA overthrew the legally elected socialist Prime Minister in 1953 -- followed shortly by seeing the 1978 Revolution up-close and personal -- made me question everything I was taught upon return to America, because everyone who hated Iran had no idea we'd inflicted an authoritarian regime on that nation and people. Most Americans had no idea that their hatred of us was justified. We propped up the Shah, we trained the SAVAK which helped keep him in power, and we got our just desserts for it.
I learned early that my country can be and often is wrong, and that has come to form my view of patriotism, which is that I love my country enough to speak up against its wrongdoings, in the hopes of making it a better place.
